Xiuwu Bian is engaged in tumor pathology diagnosis and research, focusing on stem cells, angiogenesis, and the tumor microenvironment. Leading a team, he has conducted extensive research in molecular pathology of neural tumors, tumor stem cells, angiogenesis, tumor immunity, and the pathological mechanisms of COVID-19. Additionally, he is involved in the development of intelligent diagnostic technologies assisted by artificial intelligence.

Currently, Xiuwu Bian serves as the Director of the Clinical Pathology Research Institute of the PLA, and concurrently holds positions such as President of the Pathology Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Honorary Chairman of the Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice President of the Chongqing Medical Association, former Chairman of the Chinese Division of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), Board Member of the Metastasis Research Society (MRS), and editorial board member for journals including Modern Pathology, Laboratory Investigation, Journal of Pathology, and Histopathology.
Major Research Achievements
Xiuwu Bian’s research has elucidated the mechanisms of tumor microvascular heterogeneity and its diagnostic and therapeutic significance, proposed the concept of tumor vascular pathology, and established a diagnostic system for it. He discovered the critical roles and mechanisms of tumor stem cells in tumor invasion and metastasis, expanding the research field of tumor stem cell immune microenvironment. He has led the formulation of multiple tumor pathology diagnostic standards and industry norms, advancing the progress and development of pathology in China. As a corresponding author (including co-corresponding author), he has published over 150 research papers in top-tier journals such as Nature, Science, Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Nature Immunology, Nature Neuroscience, and Science Translational Medicine.
He has received numerous awards, including
